Comment on Is Wonderbread Making You Sterile? Part 1 by Joshua McNichols

I am completely hooked on grinding grains at home. We make something like your baggies of pancake mix – but with freshly ground emmer and spelt. We grind it, soak it overnight in water then a little yogurt, then freeze it in small batches. Separately, we premix the additional dry ingredients (baking powder, salt, baking soda, sugar if we’re making waffles and want that brown crispy texture). The night before pancakes you take a frozen dough container out of the freezer. In the morning, you combine with dry ingredients, oil, eggs in the morning. This is something that sounds complicated – but once you’ve done it, you’ll never go back.

Comment on What’s the Big Deal About MSG? by Linda

My husband grew up with MSG on the table as a condiment called ‘Maggi’. So we were excited to find the Paul Bragg Liquid Amino’s thinking it was ‘safe’. Then I read your article listing it as containing MSG. So, I am researching it, and wondered if I need to throw out both the Bragg’s, the soy sauce, and the worchestire sauce? Is there a soy sauce that is safe?
Thanks,
Linda

That made me totally homesick 🙁
I’m from Jamaica and moved to North Carolina last year when I got married.Your post was quite warm and descriptive, it was like walking down the street in my home town.
I made curried chicken and fried rice for dinner tonight for me and hubby, and he now LOVES Jamaican curried chicken. He didn’t like curry before (the Indian or Thai versions).
OH and you added the flag too, nice touch. Maybe i should go buy me an plane ticket.
Where in Jamaica did you go? Ocho Rios?

My children also love home-made, natural juice popsicles. No extra sugar, no artificial colors and flavors. The only time I had a child totally, unbearably out of control, was right after one of mine ate an artificially colored and flavored popsicle from an ice cream truck. So many reasons why I’m never going to do that again!! Their favorite summertime treat is watermelon! You just can’t improve upon the Lord’s colors and flavors! Our main difficulty w/ the sugary offerings comes with visitors from abroad who bring candy for the children. I keep it out of reach and let them have a small amount once a week, when we allow them to have sugar. They usually bring enough to last 6 children for 4 months! Sometimes I question the wisdom of this, though, b/c even having it once creates a craving for more. Sugar is so addictive. I want to train my children, and myself, to have good eating habits for a lifetime!

Comment on Baking Soda Works for Me! by Jacinda

Wed, 04 May 2011 13:45:05 +0000https://familynatural.com/?p=859#comment-570We use baking Soda for most of our cleaning needs. And I was just pondering “should I try the hair care soon.” I was using Tail and Main products- fairly mild and softening as they have coconut oil and olive oil in them. As these ran out during a busy time in our lives I went back to trying some commercial products absolutely hating all of them and now forced to wash more often because of the stripping of the natural oils in my hair. What a vicious cycle. Tail and main I only had to use twice a week…
I also found using my oatmeal bar soap is mild and great to just lather around my hair line… I’ll certainly be following your progress with using baking soda for natural hygiene.

Anyway, I just made a similar post on my new blog and loved the encouragement of our like mindedness. Glad to have met you on the net!

Comment on Nightshade Foods: Should You Avoid Them? by DrKim

Sat, 27 Nov 2010 16:13:37 +0000https://familynatural.com/?p=801#comment-503In reply to Beth.
Yes, jaws count as joints. However, just because you have trouble with your jaw, it does not necessarily mean that you have an inflammatory joint problem. Do you have problems with any other joints? Also, even people who do have joint problems do not necessarily get affected by the nightshade foods. If you suspect that you are affected by them, you need to do a test to find out. You’d have to remove all of them from your diet for a period of time (I’d recommend 2-3 weeks), and see how you feel, then add them back in and note any changes.
So, don’t assume you can’t enjoy them. There’s still hope!
TMJ problems can be helped by a skilled chiropractor; have you looked into that?

Wed, 24 Nov 2010 19:15:18 +0000https://familynatural.com/?p=801#comment-499great post! Thanks for the info. I guess if jaws count as joints, the answer is that nightshades are bad for ME, which is sad b/c they are super tasty. I’m still going to try the soup though. 🙂
